Ubisoft Dives Deeper into Crypto Gaming

Ubisoft, the renowned video game publisher behind hits like Assassin’s Creed and Rainbow Six: Siege, is further expanding its horizons into the blockchain gaming world. In a strategic move, Ubisoft has partnered with Korean game publisher WeMade to join the Wemix blockchain node council. This collaboration marks Ubisoft’s latest venture into the crypto gaming space, signaling a growing industry trend.

Wemix, known for its “Wemix 3.0” network, an Ethereum-compatible EVM blockchain, will now benefit from Ubisoft’s participation as one of the 40 partners running validator nodes. The shift from the Klaytn mainnet to the new Wemix blockchain, rebranding the older chain as “Wemix Classic,” represents a significant evolution in WeMade’s blockchain strategy. Ubisoft, as the 26th partner in this coalition, brings a wealth of technical expertise and resources to the table.

The new Wemix blockchain operates on a proof-of-stake authority consensus algorithm, combining proof-of-stake structure and proof-of-authority model. As with other blockchains, validator nodes are essential for transaction validation. Ubisoft’s role in this ecosystem highlights the increasing intersection of traditional gaming giants with emerging blockchain technologies.

Ubisoft’s journey in the blockchain gaming domain is not new. The company has faced both enthusiasm and backlash, especially with its introduction of free in-game NFTs in Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint in 2021. Despite mixed reactions, Ubisoft persisted in exploring the crypto realm, becoming a node operator for blockchains like Hedera and Cronos and teasing its first blockchain game, Champions Tactics.

This partnership also points to Ubisoft’s broader interest in cutting-edge technology, evidenced by its recent commitment to NVIDIA’s AI tools for developing more sophisticated game characters. The fusion of AI and blockchain technology in gaming could unlock new levels of immersion and interaction in video games, paving the way for innovative gaming experiences.

Ubisoft’s alliance with Wemix exemplifies the gaming industry’s gradual embrace of blockchain and crypto technologies. It’s a significant move that could influence how other major players in the gaming industry approach blockchain integration.
