Yuga Labs, the mastermind behind the renowned Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT collection, has taken a strategic step forward in the metaverse realm by investing in Hadean, a pioneering spatial computing startup. This collaboration is set to supercharge the development of Yuga’s anticipated metaverse, Otherside.

Hadean’s technological prowess will be harnessed to enhance the scalability of the game, aiming to accommodate a massive influx of simultaneous players. This was evident during Otherside’s “Second Trip” playtest in March, where the game world was teeming with over 7,200 concurrent players.

While the exact investment figure remains undisclosed, Yuga Labs hinted that the amount is significant, especially when viewed against the backdrop of Hadean’s recent fundraising endeavors. It’s worth noting that Hadean secured $5 million in March, hot on the heels of a $30 million Series A funding round in September 2022, which saw contributions from the likes of Epic Games, the creators of Fortnite.

This investment will facilitate the establishment of a dedicated U.S.-based Hadean team, working in tandem with Yuga Labs on the Otherside project. The primary focus will be on achieving “mass concurrency”, ensuring a seamless experience for a vast number of players sharing the online space.

Yuga Labs CEO, Daniel Alegre, expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership, emphasizing the company’s long-term vision for Otherside and the pivotal role Hadean will play in realizing it.

Previously in September, Yuga Labs had already entered into a commercial agreement with Hadean, emphasizing the technological backbone for Otherside. Collaborations with other startups like AccelByte, Bad Rhino, and Faraway were also announced, all converging on the development of Otherside. The game even incorporates technology from another metaverse trailblazer, Improbable.

Hadean’s reputation as a metaverse infrastructure innovator is well-established. Spatial computing, its forte, represents the fusion of digital tech with real-world applications. Apple’s Vision Pro mixed-reality headset stands out as a prime example in this domain.

Beyond the Bored Ape Yacht Club, Yuga Labs also holds the intellectual property rights to the influential CryptoPunks NFT series. The company’s valuation skyrocketed to $4 billion in March 2022 after a fundraising round that raked in $450 million. As Yuga Labs continues its journey with Otherside, gaming is becoming an increasingly central pillar of its strategy.
