Reviving Old-School Crypto Mining

In an innovative move, a group of former Monero developers, including the prominent Riccardo Spagni (“fluffypony”), is set to introduce the Tari Universe, a desktop application designed to democratize the mining of the new Tari token. Echoing the early days of Bitcoin, Tari aims to allow anyone with a standard computer to participate in crypto mining without needing specialized, costly equipment.

A Nostalgic Approach to Crypto

According to Tari contributor Naveen Jain, the inspiration behind Tari draws heavily from the initial phase of Bitcoin, where individuals could mine directly from their personal computers. This approach aims to strip away the complexities and barriers that the crypto mining industry has accumulated over the years. Jain explains, “What if we brought things back to the way Bitcoin first started, where anyone can download free software from the internet, install it, and start to mine a new blockchain protocol?”

Launch Dates and Community Engagement

The Tari Universe mining software is scheduled to launch its testnet on September 12, with plans to roll out the mainnet later in the year. In a community-building effort, Tari also introduced interactive ways for users to earn tokens through social media engagements and creative tasks, such as creating memes featuring Soon, Tari’s turtle mascot.

Tari’s Technological Backbone

While Tari operates on its unique blockchain, it incorporates a proof-of-work consensus algorithm akin to Bitcoin’s and leverages Monero’s privacy-focused technologies. Jain highlighted a “hybrid” mining model where Tari will merge mine with Monero, enhancing the security and decentralization of its network without requiring additional resources from users.

Beyond a Sidechain

Despite similarities and shared security features with Monero, Jain clarified that Tari is not just a sidechain but a standalone blockchain benefiting from Monero’s established security protocols through merge mining. This method supports mining multiple cryptocurrencies simultaneously, increasing efficiency and security for smaller networks.

Mining Modes for Every User

The Tari software will offer two mining modes: ECO mode, which is resource-efficient, suitable for mining while using the computer, and Ludicrous Mode, which is resource-intensive, ideal for mining when the computer is idle, such as overnight. This flexibility allows users from various technical backgrounds to participate in mining activities easily.

Addressing the Generational Shift

Jain passionately argued for the need to embrace newer generations into the cryptocurrency fold, critiquing the industry’s current focus on serving existing enthusiasts rather than newcomers. He provocatively remarked on the generational disconnect observed at a recent Bitcoin conference, emphasizing the urgency to appeal to younger, tech-savvy audiences.

Tari Universe is positioned as a bridge between traditional crypto mining and the next generation of users, aiming to make the cryptocurrency landscape more inclusive and accessible. By revisiting the roots of crypto mining, Tari hopes to ignite a renewed interest in decentralized technology across diverse demographics.
