Rooch Co-Founder Robbed at Knifepoint in Bangkok

Rooch Network co-founder Haichao Zhu recently reported a harrowing encounter in Bangkok. Where he was robbed at knifepoint by two assailants. The incident, which took place just days before the upcoming Devcon 7 conference. Underscores growing security concerns for attendees of high-profile crypto events.

The robbery occurred at 4:30 AM local time as Haichao traveled alone after a late-night flight arrival. Although no physical injuries were reported, the attackers managed to steal his phone. Haichao has since warned fellow conference attendees about traveling alone during late hours in Bangkok. “Generally speaking, Bangkok is still a safe and fun place,” he noted, “but just like all other places, you gotta watch out for the darkness.”

Rising Security Concerns at Crypto Conferences

Haichao’s experience is part of an unsettling trend of security incidents targeting crypto conference attendees. During this year’s Ethereum Community Conference (EthCC) in Brussels, multiple attendees faced confrontations, with some resorting to self-defense. Rishant Kumar, head of growth at Kilt Protocol, fended off an attacker near the conference venue. Another attendee reportedly suffered a knee injury during a robbery, and one conference-goer recounted having a gun pointed at them during a robbery attempt.

As thousands of developers and industry leaders prepare to gather in Bangkok for Devcon 7. Ethereum’s premier developer conference, security concerns are high. Scheduled for November 12-15 at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, the event will feature prominent figures such as Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin and Ethereum Foundation executive director Aya Miyaguchi.

Growing Need for Safety Awareness at Global Crypto Events

With the increase in reported incidents, crypto industry leaders and organizers are urging attendees to exercise caution, particularly when traveling alone. As the community prepares for Devcon 7, it’s clear that increased safety awareness will play a crucial role in ensuring attendees’ security, allowing participants to focus on the innovative discussions and collaborations that the event aims to foster.
