Coinbase’s Ethereum layer-2 scaling network, Base, continues to expand its influence, and OpenSea, a leading NFT marketplace, is set to showcase the network and its burgeoning community of artists with its upcoming “Get Based” series. This initiative will feature a sequence of digital artwork drops, either free or priced below $5, aiming to promote accessibility and engagement within the NFT space.
The series will debut this Thursday with a mint from Carty Sewill, an artist and OpenSea employee, who has reimagined the classic “Endless Summer” film artwork. The “Get Based” series will highlight the works of up to 15 artists throughout the summer, with new releases scheduled weekly. These drops will be accessible via OpenSea’s website and through frames on the social media protocol Farcaster.
Among the artists and projects slated for inclusion are RGB Punks by Jhekub, “Primitives” by Hun, meme artist Cryptic Poet, Twitter’s “Fail Whale” creator Yiying Lu, illustrator Subwway, and Thank You Base God. The latter’s recent free Base NFT mint on OpenSea saw an impressive turnout with over 181,000 mints.
Base has quickly become a pivotal element of OpenSea’s strategy as the marketplace seeks to cultivate a vibrant NFT ecosystem on a chain still relatively unexplored compared to established layer-1 chains like Ethereum mainnet or Solana. “Get Based” is designed not only to spotlight emerging artists on the Ethereum L2 but also to acquaint collectors with the chain. OpenSea facilitates asset bridging to Base and supports purchases using fiat currency and credit cards through a partnership with MoonPay.
Devin Finzer, OpenSea’s co-founder and CEO, expressed his enthusiasm about the initiative: “The Base ecosystem has proven to be a catalyst for new utility and creativity using NFTs. We’ve been supportive of Base since its inception, and we’re excited to highlight up-and-coming artists with unique artistic styles and grow their presence within the larger NFT community.”
The “Get Based” series will coincide with Base’s “On-Chain Summer II” promotion, starting on June 3, which will distribute more than 600 ETH (nearly $2.3 million) in prizes, incentives, and gas credits across various projects and protocols. OpenSea, a launch partner of Base, participated in last year’s similar promotion, highlighting its ongoing commitment to the platform.
