NFT Artists Storm The Halls of Saatchi Gallery

London’s renowned Saatchi Gallery, historically a platform for contemporary art giants like Tracey Emin and Damien Hirst, is now embracing the digital age. The gallery is showcasing a collection titled “Long Live London” as a part of the Focus Art Fair, marking its foray into the world of NFT art.

While this isn’t Saatchi’s first tryst with NFTs—recall the 2021 NFT exhibition by Hendrick’s—the event has been celebrated as a significant nod from the traditional art world towards the burgeoning realm of NFTs.

Diego Castro, known in the NFT sphere as Monomo, whose art graces the exhibition, remarked, “With the MoMA in New York and the Musée d’Orsay in France also showcasing digital art, this feels like a watershed moment for artists in our domain.” His company, Muse Frame, provided the digital canvases for the exhibit.

Alexandra Art, from NFT marketplace Joyn.xyz, noted the legitimizing effect of the Saatchi name on blockchain novices. Meanwhile, artist Leo Crane, whose “London Eye” is part of the collection, reminisced about the groundbreaking ‘Sensation’ exhibition by Saatchi in 1997. He drew parallels between the then-controversial Young British Artists movement and today’s NFT revolution.

Despite the limited NFT display space, Crane urged visionaries to think bigger, hinting at the potential of a full-fledged crypto art showcase at a venue like the Royal Academy.

But as the crypto art domain grapples with skepticism—highlighted by claims that a majority of NFTs might be worthless—voices at the Saatchi Gallery remained defiant. Alexandra Art humorously pointed out that by certain metrics, most traditional art could also be deemed ‘worthless’.

NFT artist ARTJEDI1 (Bea Kayani) championed the diversity and innovation within the NFT art community. Esmay Luck-Hille, formerly of SuperRare, emphasized the importance of broadening the reach of crypto art to traditional art aficionados.

Mark Dale of W1Curates highlighted the paradigm shift in the art market and praised the collaborative spirit of the digital art community. Crane further emphasized the fluidity within the NFT community, where roles are interchangeable, and boundaries are continually redefined.

In essence, the Saatchi Gallery’s embrace of NFTs is not just a merger of the old and new but a testament to the ever-evolving nature of art. As technology and creativity intertwine, the art world stands on the cusp of an exhilarating future.
