Mistral AI Secures $415M in Funding to Rival OpenAI in the EU

Mistral AI, a French artificial intelligence (AI) startup, has made a significant stride in the tech world by closing a substantial funding round of around $415 million (€385 million). This financial boost positions the company as a potential European counterpart to the renowned OpenAI.

The latest funding round, led by Andreessen Horowitz and Lightspeed Ventures, closed on December 11, marking a major step in Mistral AI’s growth trajectory. This achievement follows a successful $113 million seed funding round in June, bringing the company’s current valuation to approximately $2 billion.

Mistral AI is dedicated to developing open-source technology for generative AI tools, chatbot development, and customizable features. With an aim to democratize AI technology, the company plans to make its products publicly available by early 2024.

Founded in March by former leads at Google’s DeepMind and Meta (parent company of Facebook and Instagram), Mistral AI is driven by a vision to establish a European leader in generative artificial intelligence. CEO Arthur Mensch emphasizes the company’s commitment to an open, responsible, and decentralized approach to technology development.

The recent funding round attracted additional investors, including Salesforce, Bpifrance, and Eric Schmidt, indicating broad support for Mistral AI’s mission and potential.

EU’s Historic Agreement on AI Regulation

In parallel to Mistral AI’s funding success, the European Union recently reached a landmark agreement on AI requirements. Finalized on December 8, this agreement sets guidelines on various AI aspects, including governmental use for biometric surveillance, regulation of advanced AI models like ChatGPT, and transparency prerequisites before public market entry.

The EU’s agreement also addresses issues intersecting with other areas of EU legislation, such as copyright and training methodologies, underlining the growing importance of AI regulation in today’s digital landscape.
