European computer company Metavisio has revealed plans to launch what it calls the world’s first Web3 laptop, featuring a built-in cold storage crypto wallet and other Web3-centric features. Created by its subsidiary, Thomson Computing, the laptop will come in three tiers tailored for education, gaming, and everyday use.
Metavisio also teased a future token airdrop for laptop users, adding another incentive for early adopters of its innovative device.
What We Know So Far
Secure Enclave Chipset
While specific details of the laptop remain under wraps, Metavisio confirmed the inclusion of a secure enclave chipset, a security feature akin to Apple’s approach. This hardware component is key to ensuring safe storage and management of sensitive cryptographic data.
Broad Price Range
The three laptop tiers will range in price from €499 ($523) to €2,000 ($2,100), depending on functionality.
- Education Model: Designed for students and educators.
- Gaming Model: Optimized for gamers with enhanced performance.
- Everyday Model: A general-purpose laptop for daily tasks.
Built-in Cold Wallet
The standout feature is the cold wallet integrated into the device, which offers offline storage for cryptocurrencies. The wallet will support:
- Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) networks
- Bitcoin
- XRP
- Bittensor
Metavisio plans to expand support to additional cryptocurrencies over time.
Cold wallets are widely regarded as safer than hot wallets because they store private keys offline, reducing hacking risks. Traditionally, cold storage solutions like Ledger come in USB form factors, but Metavisio aims to take this technology a step further by embedding it directly into a laptop.
A Custom Operating System for Web3
The Web3 laptop will run on a proprietary operating system dubbed “Web3 OS”, which aims to optimize the crypto-native user experience.
Key Features Include:
- Seamless dApp Integration: Users can interact with decentralized applications (dApps) directly from their laptops.
- Token Rewards: Users can earn tokens by completing specific tasks, similar to the play-to-airdrop mechanic popular in crypto gaming.
Metavisio confirmed that the token will require users to complete a know-your-customer (KYC) process. However, details about the blockchain powering the token remain undisclosed.
Release Timeline
Thomson Computing aims to complete the development of its Web3 OS by Q1 2025, at which point prototype development will begin. While no official release date has been set, the company is positioning the laptop as a pioneering device for a future where “you truly own your digital experience.”
Metavisio’s Vision for the Future
“The Web3 laptop is designed for a future where you truly own your digital experience,” said Stephan Français, Founder and CEO of Metavisio and Thomson Computing. “By seamlessly unifying Web3 tools, we’re laying the foundation to empower the next billion users.”
A New Era for Crypto Enthusiasts
Metavisio’s Web3 laptop represents a bold step in integrating blockchain and cryptocurrency tools into mainstream technology. With its built-in cold wallet, custom operating system, and token reward ecosystem, the device seeks to bridge the gap between everyday users and the growing Web3 world.
While the product’s final specs and release date are still unclear, its ambition could set a new standard for Web3 hardware.
