India’s Government Pledges Robust Support for Web3 Startups

The Indian government has taken a significant step in endorsing the burgeoning Web3 sector, with Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar affirming the country’s commitment to nurturing startups in this innovative field. This development, announced in a parliamentary session, underscores India’s aim to be a key contributor to the future of the Internet and Web3 technologies.

During a recent Lok Sabha session, the lower house of India’s parliament, inquiries regarding the support for Web3 startups were raised. Minister Chandrasekhar responded with a clear message: the government is dedicated to ensuring India’s influential role in shaping the Web3 landscape. He particularly noted the importance of blockchain technology, a cornerstone of Web3, highlighting the government’s grasp of the sector’s transformative potential.

In March 2020, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity) established a Centre of Excellence (CoE) focusing on blockchain technology. This initiative, a collaborative effort with industry leaders and academic institutions, aims to incubate and foster startups specializing in blockchain and other emerging technologies.

Additionally, Minister Chandrasekhar detailed various Meity-led initiatives designed to bolster startup growth. These include the Technology Incubation and Development of Entrepreneurs (TIDE 2.0) Scheme, the SAMRIDH startup accelerator, the Next Generation Incubation Scheme (NGIS), and the Support for International Patent Protection in E&IT (SIP-EIT) Scheme. Together, these programs provide a spectrum of support, ranging from mentorship and funding to training and networking opportunities, catering to startups at different development stages.

The Indian government’s active role in supporting Web3 startups illustrates its recognition of the sector’s immense potential. By creating a nurturing environment for innovation and entrepreneurship, India is positioning itself as a frontrunner in the Web3 revolution. This strategic move aligns with a global trend where governments are increasingly acknowledging the importance of emerging digital technologies and are integrating them into their economic and technological plans.
