In a strategic move to enhance its generative art ecosystem, Art Blocks, a prominent digital art company, has announced the acquisition of the NFT marketplace Sansa. This acquisition is part of Art Blocks’ broader vision to create a unified home for generative art, expanding the ways creators can release their work and providing collectors with a more cohesive experience.
Art Blocks founder and CEO Erick Calderon, also known as ‘Snowfro’, expressed his enthusiasm for this expansion. “I have been wanting to see Art Blocks lean into the breadth of what has been released on the platform for a long time,” he stated. Calderon emphasized the company’s dedication to the generative medium and its commitment to building the best possible experience for creators and collectors, with a focus on individual expression.
Founded in November 2022, Sansa initially focused on generative art and Art Blocks but soon broadened its scope to encompass a diverse range of digital art, artists, and galleries. The platform operates with a vetting process for artists, ensuring that collectors have access to a curated selection of artwork. Since its inception, Sansa has facilitated the purchase of over 1,300 artworks, generating sales of more than $2.2 million.
Art Blocks, established in 2020 by Calderon, has been at the forefront of connecting artists and collectors in the NFT space. The company is renowned for leading NFT art projects within its ecosystem, including Calderon’s “Chromie Squiggles,” Tyler Hobbs’ “Fidenza,” and Dmitri Cherniak’s “Ringers,” with the latter fetching $6.2 million at a Sotheby’s auction last year.
In March 2023, Art Blocks launched its own NFT marketplace, introducing enforced creator royalties. The acquisition of Sansa marks the first in a series of planned updates for 2024, indicating Art Blocks’ ambition to continually evolve and redefine the generative art space. This acquisition not only enhances Art Blocks’ offerings but also signifies a significant development in the NFT and digital art world, promising a vibrant future for artists, collectors, and enthusiasts alike.
